Further Reading: Recommended Books and Marker Hunting Equipment
The following collection of books and materials have been extremely useful in locating various historical markers across the United States and beyond. No historical marker hunting journey is complete without the appropriate guidebook.
The current guidebook which contains most of Virginia's historical markers. This book is useful for locating many of the markers in VA. Markers are presented with their description and location by alphabetical and geographic (county/city) indexes. A new edition is expected in 2007. Complete index with descriptions and locations of Montana's rather large and unique wooden historical markers. Book divides markers based on geographic region and provides a general map along with illustrations. A very robust and detailed historical marker guidebook for New Mexico. Provides marker descriptions, locations, as well as expansive commentary on the history and circumstances of each marker. A second New Mexico historical marker guidebook which organizes markers by county. Provides marker text and location, as well as maps for each county showing marker location.
A detailed guidebook to Central New York's historical markers. Provides descriptions for each marker. This guidebook provides information related to all of New York City's landmarks, including locations with historical markers. The book covers Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens. While not a book, this device is extremely helpful in gathering GPS coordinate data for historical markers (or anything else for that matter). The Garmin Geko 201 has been used without any problems since this site launched in January 2004. A guidebook to Louisiana's historical markers -- this edition of the Why Stop marker guidebook series presents an alphabetical listing based on location for each marker. The marker inscriptions, along iwth general directions are provided.
